We’re not just aiming to inform the public about important economic issues, WE’RE ALSO PREACHING TO THE CHOIR. Most people (including moderates and progressives) are unaware of the vast increase in inequality of incomes and wealth over 30 years, and the full extent of economic decline it has caused. Many are probably still unaware of the war on the middle class waged by corporations, Wall Street, and billionaires. Many people aren’t yet aware that income inequality is back where it was at the start of the Great Depression, and that the top 1% has gained at least $10 trillion at the expense of the bottom 99% over the last 30 years, financing huge tax reductions for themselves with over $12 trillion of Republican-generated federal debt. Once you know this, let your friends know too! Pass along this info-site, and establish your own info-service.
There is a growing “Save the American Dream” movement in America, and it is cutting through myopia and propaganda to focus on the important issues facing Americans regarding the future of prosperity and democracy. MoveOn provides a new (as of June 2011) news and clearinghouse site for The American Dream Movement. This site provides a comprehensive (and growing) list of organizations involved in the movement. Now is the time to get involved, and one or more of these groups may be just right for you!
TAX THE RICH. That’s the key. The very rich are mostly paying 15% on capital gains (the same rate as people in poverty), and their corporations are increasingly avoiding tax liability. That simply has to change! For stable inequality, the rich should be paying income tax at a 70% top rate, not 35%, or even 40%. A lower rate (23-29%) would be an economic death blow. (They want to get YOUR VOTE if you are in the 35% and 33% brackets. Clever, aren’t they? But you lose it all and then some via lost income and inflation, with their depression-era economics.) UNLESS YOU WANT A DEPRESSION, DON’T VOTE FOR THEM.
CORPORATE LEADERS AND BILLIONAIRES are not only destroying the American economy and the middle class, but many of them are now openly attempting to depress media opposition, control the election process, and actively destroy what remains of unionism. They are even beginning to replace local governments, without the consent of the governed, with private and corporate supervision. These activities are extremely anti-democratic and veer toward fascism.
THE ULTRA-RIGHT CORPORATE LEADERS AND BILLIONAIRES ARE NOT TRUE CONSERVATIVES. True conservatives like Goldwater, Reagan, and Eisenhower, and economists like John Maynard Keynes and even Milton Friedman sought to preserve freedom of opportunity for everyone through free markets. Today’s billionaire plutocrats have destroyed free markets, and their Republican and tea-bag spear carriers are helping them bring down education, economic opportunity and prosperity, open media and communication, adequate health care and retirement security, individual freedoms, and even democracy itself (e.g., Benton Harbor, MI). The American people cannot afford another election like 2010.
“How far can you go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without?” –“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence.” – “The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1959
“I was 21 and looking for work in 1932, one of the worst years of the Great Depression. And I can remember one bleak night in the thirties when my father learned on Christmas Eve that he’d lost his job. To be young in my generation was to feel that your future had been mortgaged out from under you, and that’s a tragic mistake we must never allow our leaders to make again.” – Ronald Reagan, 1981
“Plutocrats and Republicans are wiping out the middle class, destroying our democracy and freedom from within, and leading us into another depression.” – Skip and Mike, 2011
THEY LIED IN 2010. Now angry Wisconsin voters are recalling the Republican legislators they elected, and plan to recall the Republican governor that betrayed them. Working people have been betrayed in Florida and Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin, and all over America. Republican state governments are not balancing budgets; they’re increasing the wealth of the plutocrats while closing schools and destroying programs for the middle class. The American people cannot afford another election like 2010.
THE ULTRA-RIGHT CONTROLS MOST OF THE MEDIA, AND CORPORATIONS CAN SPEND AS MUCH AS THEY WANT IN ELECTION CAMPAIGNS. The future of America, therefore, depends on the American people waking up to the truth, and working hard to dispel apathy and misinformation. It’s not enough for each of us just to learn the truth. If we all just vote, we’ll lose again like in 2010. We must fight voter registration restrictions designed to reduce voter participation, and work to make sure everyone votes. America needs to vote for its future, next time and every time.
BIG FINANCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL MULTINATIONALS MAY BE TOO BIG TO FAIL, BUT WE’RE NOT. Wall Street shenanigans destroyed over $6 trillion of private investments in 2008. Republicans want to privatize Social Security so Wall Street can have more of your money to play with, just like they did in 2008, and they have prevented reforms that would effectively stop them. For people who are retired or who soon will be, preserving Social Security is now more important than ever.
IT’S YOUR COUNTRY, YOUR FUTURE. Are you young and in school? You know it’s getting harder to get and to afford a quality education, and then to get a quality job after graduation. We’re headed for a depression, and to stop it we need to TAX THE RICH. Get more involved in politics now and do what you can to save your future; get political action groups started, support pro-people candidates, talk to your friends and parents, and urge them to be informed and involved. AMERICA CANNOT AFFORD A REPEAT OF 2010.
